Reshad joins the FIA Formula 3 Championship grid
Réunion Island racing driver Reshad de Gerus is ready to take the biggest step of his motorsport career after joining Charouz Racing System for the 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship.
The ambitious 17-year-old will contest 21 races, across seven race weekends – all of which will support the FIA Formula One World Championship in both Europe and North America.
“When I tested the F3 car at Jerez in Spain last year it was an incredible experience and I felt very confident with it straight away,” Reshad explained. “It’s nice to drive with a lot of power, downforce and grip.
“It’s a big step moving up to F3 as a rookie, but I think I can be fast with that car this year.”
Reshad, a long-standing member of the FFSA Academy programme which nurtures French junior racing talent, joins the F3 grid after a season of competition in the Formula Renault Eurocup.
He found it particularly challenging to extract the maximum performance from Renault Sport’s junior single-seater car, and is hoping a switch to F3 machinery will enable him to showcase his natural racing talent.
He said: “The Formula Renault was very heavy and difficult to drive – the hardest in my whole career. I never felt very confident in it.
“The F3 car is completely different and I took a lot of pleasure from driving it. The power and weight suited me because you can push and the car rotates well.
“You can really go for it and you have the feeling you are controlling the car, rather than the car controlling you, which is how it felt in Formula Renault.”
Reshad’s hopes for the new season are boosted by the fact he has already raced at five of the seven tracks on the new-for-2021 calendar. Only the rounds at Spielberg in Austria and Austin in the USA will present an entirely new challenge.
“All of the elements for the new season are in place and I’m looking forward to racing a great car on some fantastic tracks,” he said.
“I also think there’s an atmosphere at Charouz Racing System to be successful and I think the team has made some good moves to be fighting at the top in F3.
“This will be the team’s third season in the category and I think it’s a good situation for me to enter the team as a rookie because they will push me and I can learn a lot.”
Reshad’s 2021 FIA Formula 3 Championship programme will be supported by Colipays and Région Réunion.
